In this 2 day workshop you will learn about the hip joints and how they impact your yoga practice. We will teach you how to prevent injuries in yoga practice and how to progress safely in postures from a beginner level through to advanced practice.

There are a multitude of yoga postures. In most of them the amount of movement in your hip joints directly affects whether you will feel comfortable and safe. For example, if you don’t have enough hip extension you will feel compression in your lower back when you do back-bends. Or conversely, if you don’t have enough hip flexion you will feel pain in your back, sit bones or down the back of your legs when you do deep forward bends. Many people have imbalances from one side to the other and this can cause discomfort and prevent you from improving your practice. Your postures may look good but you feel discomfort during or after practice.

Over the two days we will look at the amount of movement necessary in a variety of postures.  You will learn how to assess yourself and others and then use logical progressions to improve your postures so you feel strong, light and pain free. You will gain a better understanding of what the steps are to improve in the short and long term.

Over the 2 days we will cover:

Movements of the hip joints
Bandhas and core strength
Technique – safe practice to prevent injuries
Progressions – orderly steps to progress without injury
Common injuries and how to recover from them
Question time and case studies

Principles of practice and injury prevention will be given in a concise and practical manner - meaning that you will be able to apply this knowledge immediately into your yoga and help your students if you are a teacher.

You do not need any previous knowledge of anatomy to benefit from this workshop. The information is presented in a practical manner using demonstrations, worksheets, skeletons group discussion, and question time. Suitable for yoga teachers and experienced practitioners (at least 1 year of practice).
